My Experience with Coffee Enemas (Including my Step-by-Step DIY)

Things I have dealt with my whole life without explanation:

♡ Constipation

♡ Depression

♡ Sugar addiction

♡ Brain fog

♡ Moodiness

♡ Lack of motivation

♡ Weak immune system

I also struggled with sugar addiction, depression, and constipation well into my 30s. It took me a long time to learn about the gut-brain connection. It took me years, using a multi-therapeutic approach, to work through changing my emotional relationship to food so I stopped suffering from bloating, constipation, indigestion, and depression.

In particular, constipation is very toxic for the body. If you're constipated that means toxins are literally sitting in your colon and this affects your entire body.

The coffee enema has been around since the 1940s and has endless applications for vibrant health. Palmitates in coffee increase the production of GST (glutathione s-transferese) by up to 700 times. These powerful free-radical-quenching enzymes assist your liver to more effectively detoxify your entire body, which in turn allows your body to function as it was created to, and to heal and recover from all health issues.

If you do the research, you will find that many kinds of poisons, like pthalates from plastics, and heavy metals are very difficult to get out of the body. Not only that, but the toxic load in our bodies is continually being added to every day through seen and unseen sources.

I have been doing coffee enemas for around 4 years, and yes: I did them during both of my pregnancies + breastfeeding journeys, as well as postpartum.

Why Red Light Therapy is Part of my Self-Care Routine | Angi Fletcher Blog

The benefits have been incredible. During pregnancy, coffee enemas were the only thing that helped ease my morning sickness. The reason being that the coffee stimulates bile flow and increases enzymatic action of the liver. It is the same reason that milk thistle is also recommended for morning sickness - because of it's liver cleansing properties.

Having said that, I would not recommend starting enemas during pregnancy if you’ve never done them before. It goes without saying, but obviously I have to say it anyway: if you are pregnant and/or breastfeeding - talk to a health care professional that is well versed in alternative therapies before you get started.

In my postpartum time, I often multi tasked by doing red light therapy on my abdomen while I did my coffee enemas. That was amazing for postpartum and for healing my c-section scar.

Don’t get me wrong though — I was scared, really really scared to try it for the first time!

After I got the coffee enema kit, I think it sat untouched in my closet for over a year because I was terrified of starting.

It just seemed so overwhelming, even though I had all the information, it was just too terrifying for me. When I finally decided to go for it, I had some help getting it started, and I cried during the entire session. I cried the first 4 or 5 times that I did it - so many emotions dormant in our gut! There was such a huge emotional release. And eventually I felt confident to do it on my own.

The thing is - once your “why” is stronger than your fear, you’ll spend more time focusing on your why, rather than being paralyzed by your fear.

My husband told me that when I was trying to quit smoking (before he was my husband). He actually gave me the most amazing piece of advice -- he said,

“When you’re ready to quit, you’ll quit.”

Seems pretty simple, but it’s true. When you’re ready to find out more info on the coffee enema -- you’ll try it, you’ll do it. Because the benefits far outweigh the fear.

The reason you have a hard time trusting your intuition is because you are still convinced that some outside authority knows better than you.

The non scientific benefits I can personally attest to are:

♡ Clearer skin

♡ Less sugar cravings

♡ Easier bowel movements

♡ Less bloating

♡ Can’t remember the last time I got sick (cold of flu)

♡ Mood enhancer/stability

♡ Way less period cramps

Some people unwind watching Netflix. I do a coffee enema with red light therapy and listen to a podcast

If I’m feeling sad and stressed, instead of feeling sorry for myself, I do my best to take action. This usually includes detoxing and regenerating, often with a coffee enema, among other things.

When coffee is used as an enema, it is absorbed through the descending colon and into the hemorrhoidal vein, where it is transported to the portal vein, and directly into the liver. After a coffee enema, glutathione s-transferase enzyme (the enzyme system that removes free radicals from the bloodstream) increases by 600-700%. Every cell of blood in the body passes through the liver every three minutes. Retaining the coffee solution for 12-15 minutes each time a coffee enema is used is essential to gain the full benefit of the dialysis that occurs:

♡ Removal of toxins, including releasing headaches/migraines

♡ Detoxification of the liver and colon

♡ Pain reliever

♡ Constipation relief

♡ Aids in release of depression and anxiety

♡ Increased energy levels

♡ Improves digestion

Organic enema coffee contains the alkaloid theophylline, which dilates blood vessels, increasing blood dialysis across the colon wall. The therapeutic action of the coffee enema is to improve the abilities of the liver and gallbladder to remove toxins and cancerous metabolic byproducts by stimulating the flow of bile and increasing the enzymatic action of the liver. Increased blood supply to the intestinal tract improves muscle tone and digestion, as well as the elimination processes.

I love this feedback from one of my followers,

“I’ve been doing enemas for 14 months and it has nearly erased my migraines, and helped so much with depression, anxiety and digestion. I now do them 2 times weekly!”

My body used to crave sugar like a drug and instead of making myself crazy trying to “quit” sugar, I had to go to the root of my addiction and detox and cleanse my body so I didn’t physically and emotionally crave it anymore.

Instead of focusing on eliminating sugar, I started cleansing my colon from overgrowth of candida and yeast. I started flooding my system  with proper gut healing nutrition -- basically eating from my fridge instead of my pantry -- along with:

♡ proper hydration

♡ ozone therapy

♡ exercise

♡ essential oils

♡ dry brushing

♡ lymph draining

♡ PEMF

♡ personalized supplement routine

…..you get the idea

It also took a ton of research and experimentation, but finally clicked when coaching my mom through an entire lifestyle change around nutritional healing after chemo and radiation ravaged her body.

Ultimately, kicking a sugar addiction is like kicking a cocaine addiction….it’s nearly impossible to do without proper rehab which in sugar’s case is cleansing and detoxifying.

Coffee enemas and photobiomodulation are 2 tools that have made the greatest difference in my health.

What I know now is that the body’s language of distress is inflammation. The connection between the gut and the brain is called the gut brain axis. Central to this axis is the vagus nerve that extends from the base of the brain stem down to major organs. Coffee enemas have been a big factor in improving/repairing my gut health.

Other benefits are:

♡ Repairs digestive tissue

♡ Cleanses the liver

♡ Improves blood circulation

♡ Increases immunity

♡ Helps with cellular regeneration

♡ Relieves digestive issues such as frequent constipation, bloating, cramping and nausea

♡ Improves low energy levels and moods such as fighting symptoms if depression

Here is another shared experience from one of my followers:

“You made a comment while you were in NY about taking care of your health now or have a doctor do it later in life. It was after one of your colonics sessions. I had been thinking about coffee enemas for a while, but had a ton of anxiety about it. I have had a huge, terrible rash all over my torso, arms and face for almost 2 years. I started doing coffee enemas 3 times a week since your comment, and my rash has almost healed! I missed a week, and of course the rash came back! Thank you!”

Historically, coffee enemas have been used to treat ailments ranging from cancer to depression as coffee enemas stimulate detoxification enzymes in the liver and increase its detox capacity. Coffee enemas can also:

♡ Detoxify and improve glutathione levels

♡ Ease PMS symptoms such as cramping and bloating

♡ Reduce anxiety

♡ Banish candida

♡ Boost energy

♡ Contribute to hormone regulation

♡ Improve mental clarity and focus

♡ Reduce chronic pain

♡ Improve skin health

How to do a coffee enema at home:

I use a french press and this grinder to make coffee for my enemas. I use Kion coffee, PureLife Organic Coffee, and/or Dr. Wilson’s organic gold roast. You want to make sure the coffee is organic, free of mold, pesticides, and fungus, and preferably higher in palmitic acid. DO NOT USE CONVENTIONAL COFFEE. I use 3-4 tbsp of organic coffee. As a beginner, I would suggest starting with 1-2 tbsp (remember, I’ve been doing these for years).

Take whatever amount of coffee you’re using and put it in your french press, then fill with filtered water that is just under boiling point. Only use filtered water! Don’t ever put tap water in your body. Tap water again is filled with toxins, fluoride, chlorine, pesticides, etc.

Let the coffee cool to room temperature and then pour it into your enema bucket. Make sure the clamp of your tube is closed, otherwise your coffee will pour all over the counter. I like it a little bit warmer than room temperature personally, but some people like it a little bit cooler. It creates different reactions expanding and contracting the colon.

You can also add tangerine essential oil if you like - it helps to balance the effects of the coffee by supporting the lymphatic, digestive, and nervous systems. It also helps the body to produce glutathione, which aids in detoxification of the liver.

If I have time, I will first fill the enema bucket with just filtered water or chamomile tea to flush out my lower bowels so that I can hold the coffee longer.

Lay a towel on your bathroom floor and get yourself set up. I set myself up in the tub because I don’t have enough room on my bathroom floor (tiny bathroom). Make sure to unclamp your tubing and let a bit of coffee run through before you begin so that you get all the air out of the tube.

Lube up the end of the tube/catheter and, um - the point of entry as well….I don’t know how to say that professionally, ha! This is the best lube ever:

Ideally you want to lay on  your left side for 3-5 minutes, then on your back for 5 minutes, then on your right side and back onto your left. If you can’t hold it for that long, you can always go to the toilet, let it out, and try again.

Once you’re comfortable set up, insert the catheter, take a deep relaxed breath and unclamp the tube. Let the coffee flow in while you breath, read, cry , laugh, sing, whatever you do to relax. I like to massage my stomach with essential oils to relax and multitask healing. You can also take a relaxing bath while you retain, or do some red light therapy.

Once you’re done, head to the toilet and let it all out. Make sure you have a squatty potty!

After you are done with your emema, use a binder like chlorophyll or activated charcoal. Chlorophyll binds toxins tightly. Once coffee stimulates your gallbladder to contract and release toxin-laden bile into the small intestine, it is vital to deliver something where the bile duct enters the intestine to bind the toxins so tightly they will not be reabsorbed through the intestinal wall. Make sure to also drink a ton of filtered water throughout the day after you do an enema!

I also take a teaspoon of Ion Biome immediately after coffee enema. (I did a blog about how I healed my gut with Ion Biome - click here if you’d like to read!)

Please remember to do your own research! The FAQ section of the enema kit website is a great place to start and includes video tutorials!
